ALDWORTH, Douglas Gilbert Hayward

Douglas Gilbert Hayward Aldworth was born in Dover in 1899 to Arthur Ernest Aldworth and Edith Rose Weigall. He was the second of their four children, the only son. Arthur Aldworth was a Clergyman in the Church of England, ordained in Salisbury where, in 1895, he married Edith Weigall, daughter of a portrait painter. Their first child, Joan, was born in Salisbury before they moved to Dover where Douglas was born. In 1901 Arthur was offered the parish of Laverstock on the outskirts of Salisbury.

In the 1911 census eleven year old Douglas was in Allhallows boarding school in Honiton, Devon while the three girls were at home with their parents in Salisbury. It is not known when Douglas enlisted in the Royal Berkshire Regiment but in October 1918 he was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion which had moved to Ireland in 1917.

He was presumably returning on leave when he travelled on RMS Leinster on the 10th of October 1918. He did not survive the sinking but his body was recovered and he was buried in Grangegorman Military Cemetery in Dublin. His name is recorded on the Salisbury War Memorial. In his will he left £9 11s 10d to be administered by his father.
